Severe drought conditions have increased the potential for livestock poisoning throughout many regions of Virginia, Virginia Tech Extension specialists warn.
Toxic nitrate levels tend to accumulate when plant growth is slowed due to abnormal growing conditions, such as drought. Feeding affected forage to livestock can result in abortions, decreased production and even death.
