The latest pollutant of concern to researchers is nitrogen. It gets dumped into the waters of the Chesapeake by sewage treatment plants. Nitrogen promotes the growth of algae which affects the oxygen necessary for the survival of marine life. In a recent report to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Chesapeake Bay Program, a special scientific and technical advisory committee urged the removal of nitrogen by biological sewage treatment techniques of the sort that have been successful in foreign countries. But funding for the effort is lacking. Maryland alone has earmarked money for nitrogen removal—$18 million for its Patuxent River sewage treatment plant.
Meanwhile, the EPA is planning to remove phosphorus from the Chesapeake, a chemical which also fosters algae. But researchers argue that this only affects the quality of the fresh water, whereas the brackish and salt water in the Bay’s southern areas deserves attention, too.
