Acting Commissioner of Revenue Beverly S. Atkins won election to the post on Tuesday, handily defeating challengers Phillip L. Smith and Mollie Dennis Welch.
Ms. Atkins received a total of 1,265 votes, 70 percent of the 1,796 ballots cast county-wide in the commissioner’s race. Mr. Smith finished second with 301 votes, followed by Mrs. Welch’s 230.
“I just want to thank everyone for the vote of confidence. We will continue to work hard in the office — to continue to serve the public,” Ms. Atkins said. “It’s great to have a successful ending to many long hard hours of work. It was worth the effort.”
The election for Commissioner of Revenue was the only contested race on the county slate this year.
Republican Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr. was unopposed for election to a second term representing the Seventh Congressional District. The Congressman received 1,502 votes in Rappahannock County, or 83.7 percent of the total ballots cast.
Mr. Slaughter’s campaign manager, H. George White III, said that the count was “incredible ... far and away our best county showing. We’re very pleased with the result.” Mr. White said that the total represented 123 votes more than Mr. Slaughter received from Rappahannock County in 1984. Mr. Slaughter barely carried Rappahannock that year with 53.1 percent of the vote, a total of 1,379 ballots.
