close to the walls. So why build a so-called “basketball superdome?”
A 750-seat gymnasium is hardly a “superdome.” It might make attending games more enjoyable to have adequate seating. It will certainly be less of an embarrasment for our students, when we don’t have referees explaining to visiting teams how the two center lines work. Our students won’t have to be embarassed about the locker facilities we offer visiting teams, and our graduates will be able to invite their entire families to see them graduate. But, of course, as Mr. Eastham well knows, the main reason for building a new gymnasium is to free up space in the existing gymnasium for an expansion of the core facilities of the school, especially the cafeteria. The temporary classrooms will have to be replaced fairly soon. The plans call for replacing them with permanent classrooms partly in space from the exisiting gymnasium.
Completion of this plan will not mean Rappahannock has a first-class high school plant. It will be barely adequate. After all these years of delay which have seen the doubling of the cost of expansion, don’t our current and coming high school students at least deserve barely adequate?
