Bag limits, season limits, hunting with dogs, carrying loaded rifles and shotguns in vehicles - these and other contentious hunting questions will be up for discussion at a special public hearing scheduled for Tuesday, December 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the courthouse.
The session was initiated by a letter from orchardist George Sharp delivered to the Board of Supervisors’ meeting Monday by Hampton District representative Newbill Miller. Expressing concern over the size of the county’s deer herd, Mr. Sharp asked the supervisors to petition the Game Commission to double the number of days in the deer season in which animals of either sex can be taken and increase the bag limit from two deer to three with the provision that one of the three must be an antlerless deer.
According to Supervisor Miller, the orchardist consulted with Rappahannock Game Warden Jim Bankston who reportedly concurs on the recommendation for liberalized bag limits and hunting season.
Chairman Hubert Gilkey suggested that the proposal be taken to the Game Commission’s February meeting when regulations on the 1987 hunting seasons will be established. “Now is the time to decide what we want to go to Richmond with,” he added. A quick check around the table found the rest of the board members in favor of the changes proposed by Mr. Sharp.
