Hugo and Catherine Sinnott think the state should ban all through truck traffic on Route 522 in Rapphannock, the site of four highway fatalties during the last year and five auto accidents in a sevenday span recently.
The couple, who have monitored traffic on the narrow and winding road during the last year, asked state highway officials to consider the ban at a pre-allocation hearing Monday for secondary and unpaved roads.
The Sinnotts told Transportation Commissioner Ray Pethtel and Transportation Board member Constance Kinchloe (Culpeper District), who presided over the meeting at the Transportation Department’s Culpeper District Office, that Route 522 has become increasingly unsafe because of the tractor-trailer ban on Route 17 north in Warrenton.
Since the Route 17 ban was imposed in November 1984, truck traffic on Route 522 has increased dramatically* they said.
