The “stirrup cup” was a cup of whiskey drunk both to ward off the morning chill and steel the riders’ nerves against the excitement of the impending hunt. That tradition, too, has survived to the present day.
The Rappahannock Hunt has a proud tradition, as well. It dates to 1926, and can claim among its former Masters of Foxhounds Jack DeBergh and James W. Fletcher. The hunt has gained an international reputation, mostly owing to the “no holds barred” style which has characterized its members through the years.
Mr. Lehew recounted an instance during one of his first outings with the hunt, as he negotiated a steep downhill. “I was scared,” he remembered, explaining that the mountainous terrain takes some getting used to. “I looked back, and there were two ladies - right behind me, and gaining. I figured that if they could do it I’d better get going.”
