year training. A few are never able to make the grade to join the pack. ”

He explained that the pack consists of two types of hounds, one being the “strike hounds” who take the lead and find the fox. They are the “hardest hunters,” according to Mr. Brown. Then there are the “pack hounds,” which make up the bulk of the pack. They fall in behind the leaders, Mr. Brown said. He added that there is no particular factor that makes for a good hound. “It’s not a matter of age, or anything. It’s more the temperament of the individual hound.”

On Saturday, the hounds did an excellent job, Mr. Brown reported. Given the weather conditions, the huntsman said, “We had a very good day.”

Several new members were accepted into the hunt on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. William Dobrovir, Dr. Amos Willis, Bonnie Vaden, Caroline Davis and Brian Fitzgerald all were officially welcomed as members of the hunt at the opening meet.

The hunt will continue to meet on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays through March, weather permitting.
