For older children, the state agency has created ecology clubs, which encourage public service projects which make not only the children but the entire community more aware of the problem of trash.
The litter control program also advocates recycling as a method to cut down on trash disposal, thus cutting down on litter. It suggests recycling bottles, cans and paper, and has established a toll-free telephone number for information about recycling centers throughout the state of Virginia. The number is 1-800KEEP ITT.
For those who ignore the urging of RALLY to help clean up Rappahannock, there is the law enforcement component of the Virginia Plan. Littering is against the law in Virginia. It is a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a $1000 fine.
Mr. McCarthy reported that he was pleased with the response to his request for volunteers to participate in the program. He added that, given the initial response, “With any luck at all the program will be a success” in making the citizens of Rappahannock more aware of the importance of keeping Rappahannock beautiful.
