pahannock Hunt is often compared to the Irish hunts, where the members are also known for a devil-maycare style. “Much of the hunt’s reputation,” he said, “is Jim Bill (Fletcher’s) doing. He was known for his fearless riding style. He was not afraid of anything. ”
Not only the riders of the Rappahannock Hunt are well-known. Rappahannock is known as “the cradle of American foxhunting,” according to Oliver Brown. The American Foxhound, bred especially for foxhunting, was originally bred by the Bywaters family in Rappahannock County.
Mr. Brown had 31 hounds on the trail last Saturday. He explained that he looks for three things in a good foxhound: (1) a good nose, to pick up the fox’s scent; (2) a strong, deep voice, which makes it easier to hear and thus to find in thick woods; and (3) “smarts,” a dog with intelligence, which makes it easier to train.
