“This has been recommended by one citizen and the game warden,” interjected Carson Johnson. “The game warden is put here to enforce
the laws. He’s not here to make recommendations on what the laws should be, The other 5,000 of us in Rappahannock should have a chance for input.”
Supervisor Miller noted that he had directed the orchardist to ask the county game warden if the deer herd could tolerate the additional hunting pressure; that Jim Bankston had not recommended any legislation. However, the supervisors agreed to schedule a public hearing before sending a proposal to the Game Commission.
“It’s another fun meeting to look forward to!” Supervisor Nelson Lane said facetiously, predicting that the courtroom will be packed with opposing factions on the hunting issues. “But it’s a service we owe our constituents.” In addition to hearing opinions on liberalization of bag limits and season, Mr. Lane asked that the supervisors also declare open season for comments on other hunting issues - specifically hunting with dogs and illegal road hunting.
With a wide open agenda, the board members agreed they needed narrow rules of order. For the public hearing, those intending to speak will be asked to sign up when they arrive, they will be required to speak from a podium and they will be limited to three minutes each.
