ne prayer wnicn Maunce Herndon, Senior Warden of Trinity Episcopal Church, recited in blessing before the hunt, is translated from the original French. It is attributed to Saint Hubert, the patron saint of hunters, and has been used in blessing the hounds, horses and hunters for many years. It reads, in part:
Hea r our humble prayer, O God, for nil animals,
especially those in whose companionship we find joy and help.
We entreat for them thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them,
we ask a heart of compassion
gentle hands
and kindly words.
Make us all to be trv£ friends of animals
a nd to share the blessings of the merciful.
Bless, 0 Lord, riders and horses and hounds that run.
In lheir running'
bless and shield these riders from da nger to life and limb.
May thy children who ride
and thy creatures who carry them
come safely to the close of this day.
It was in England, during the reign of Queen Victoria, that the opening meet, and the blessing of the hounds, became a social occasion. Prince Albert, the Queen’s consort, was fond of grand ceremonies, with their attendant splendor, and he instituted the practice of inviting non-hunters to join the riders for a "stirrup cup” before the hunt began.
