As part of the Non-Game and Endangered Species Program, seven peregrines were raised on Eastern Shore hacking towers by adults which had returned to the area. Biologists were also able to raise another five birds on a tower at Mount Rogers, in the southwestern part of the state.
Scientists continue to band peregrine falcons to learn more about migration patterns, age distribution and population trends. Fifteen were recently banded at the Wise Point banding station along with about 300 merlins.
The information gained through this effort is part of the non-game research sponsored by the tax check-off offered to citizens on the state’s income tax form.
