Heating tips

save energy

With the winter heating season come higher energy bills. But there are ways to trim dollars off heating bills by following some energy-saving tips.

The Potomac Edison Company recommends insulation in walls, floors and ceilings. If adequately installed, insulation pays for itself by reducing heating bills up to 30 percent. Wrapping ductwork with insulating material, along with repairing any leaks, can help save energy, too.

“Installing storm doors and windows or covering standard windows with plastic can cut window heat loss by 50 percent, if those doors and windows are sealed around joints and well-caulked around frames,” says Gerry Warren, residential applications specialist. “This keeps heated air from escaping. ”

Diming the day, thermostats should be set between 65 and 68 degrees, Warren recommends. At night, they can be set back to 55 degrees. When these setback periods occur for more than eight hours, it’s possible to trim up to eight percent off home heating bills.

In homes heated by a heat pump, the thermostat should be kept at one temperature setting. “Moving the thermostat up and back can cause the auxiliary heating system to come on. This back-up system costs more to run than the heat pump,” Warren adds.
