The vote in Rappahannock was 809 against, 787 for.

Question Three, a proposal to allow the Virginia Supreme Court to rule on certain questions of state law certified to it by federal court or appellate court of another state, was approved by a wide margin in both Rappahannock County (1,160, yes; 375, no) and by voters throughout the Commonwealth (657,266, yes; 231,399, no).

Question Four, which would allow the Commonwealth a limited right of appeal of preliminary dismissals and exclusions of evidence in felony cases, was approved by voters across the state by a margin of three to one (662,335 for; 225,385 opposed). In Rappahannock, the amendment was approved by the same margin, 1,169 for and 387 against.

Voter turnout in Rappahannock exceeded expectations for an offyear election with only one contested race. Fifty-five percent of registered voters cast ballots Tuesday. State-wide totals for voter turnout were not available Wednesday morning, but neighboring Fauquier County reported only 20 percent of registered voters went to the polls. There were no contested elections in Fauquier.

The 55 percent figure compares with an 80 percent turnout in the county in 1984, the last Presidential election year. In the last off-year election, 65 percent of the voters cast ballots. There are 3,236 registered voters in the county, and 1,793 participated in Tuesday’s election.

Official election results will not be available until they are certified by the State Board of Elections in Richmond, sometime later this month, according to a spokesman in the office who spoke with the Rappahannock News Wednesday morning.
