Some additional energy-saving tips:
• When a heating system other than a heat pump is used, close central air conditioning outlets and returns before heat is turned on.
• Vacuum all heating grills or outlets often to remove dirt and dust which can hinder air flow.
• Be sure furniture or draperies are not blocking heating outlets.
• Make sure that no heat producing appliance, such as a lamp or television, is located near the thermostat. Heat put off by these devices will cause an inaccurate reading.
• Place a rug at the door to keep out cold air. Also, try to open and close doors quickly.
• Close off rooms not being used and set the thermostat in these rooms at 55 to 60 degrees.
• Open curtains and let the sun shine in when using a room. Close curtains at night. Also, consider hanging curtains with insulated linings. They cut down on night heat loss through windows.
• Build a smaller fire. A roaring fire wastes energy when temperature is above 35 degrees.
• Close up fireplaces when not in use to keep out cold air.
