Board serves
up girls’ JV
volleyball
Last Tuesday, the School Board returned a serve from athletic director John Toth and approved a junior varsity girls volleyball team for Rappahannock County High School.
In relaying the request for authorization, Superintendent Robert Estabrook noted that the current girls’ volleyball coach is willing to run the JV program without additional renumeration. “There’s considerable interest in the JV team,” he said, adding that practice for the winter sport begins in mid-November after girls’ basketball ends.
“Should this teacher leave or tire of coaching, and the board has sanctioned this program, we may have to supply a second coach at some time,” Chairman Beverly Massie pointed out. “Is it financially feasible for us to pick up an additional coaching position?”
“I don’t see any real good reason not to do it,” Bill Oliver responded. “It seems we have a demand for it .. . We should encourage it.”
A junior varsity program would be “worth it to instigate interest in the varsity sport,” added Paul Nichols, suggesting that a “strong intramural program” be organized as well with that same aim.
