Rappahannock County has joined the Clean Virginia Campaign, kicking off a multi-faceted effort to rid the county of unsightly litter.
Coordinating the anti-litter drive, which will be known as the Rappahannock Anti-Litter League and You (RALLY), is Zoning Administrator John McCarthy. The Virginia Division of Litter Control provides funds, materials and suggestions for implementing the program, but the effort is tailored to meet the needs of each locality, Mr. McCarthy explained. 1
Lynn Hudson, commissioner of the Division of Litter Control, and her assistant, Janice C. Robertson, were on hand at the opening meeting to explain the Virginia Plan. During their presentation they stressed that litter is not only ugly, it is dangerous as well.
It presents a health hazard in several ways. First, it can serve as a haven for rodents and insects which spread disease. Second, people get hurt by broken bottles, rusty cans, boards with nails left imbedded, even trash blowing off the back of a truck can strike a pedesterian - or cause another motorist to have an accident.
