In last year’s fourth annual Woolly Bear Contest, the entries started arriving early in October as soon as the furry ones started putting in an appearance in this area. Judging of the contestants was an even more difficult task than in previous years but talent finally prevailed and several entries caught the eyes of the judges.
The woolly one selected the Cutest and Cuddliest, “the fairest of the fair,” and crowned with the name of Alma, was entered by Hilda Dunlap of Walnut Towers in Hagerstown, Md. The runner-up in this category was entered by Kathleen Yommer of Boonsboro, Md. Kathleen’s husband John was the runnerup in last year’s contest.
In the second category of the Biggest and Woolliest (which we labeled Hairy Hager), the honor went to the entry submitted by Joey Young of Keedysville, Md., with the runner-up entered by Arthur Kiefer of Hagerstown.
Each winner received an award of $100 for the entry and the runners-up each received six copies of the Almanack to share with their friends.
We hope that this year you are the one to find the woolly bear that will catch the judges’ eyes and thus have an extra $100 of spending money for the upcoming Christmas season. So, keep your eyes peeled for the champion.
