The problem with tobacco is the poison it contains, nicotine. Unfortunately, nicotine is extremely addictive and seems to be the substance that causes the “good feeling” that is associated with smoking.

Although low-nicotine cigarettes are available, people who smoke them inhale more deeply, or simply increase the numbers of cigarettes smoked to get the same effect as with the higher nicotine brands.

'Die addictive powers of nicotine in cigarette smoking have not been widely acknowledged. The tar in cigarettes contains the cancer-causing agents and the carbon monoxide seems to be related to the heart problems.

Knowing these things, it would seem ridiculous to smoke and all-important to break the habit if you have already started. The addiction is strong and the longer you smoke the harder it is to quit.

Unfortunately, although the total number of cigarettes smoked every year is falling and has been going down for the past 13 years, this is mainly among males. The number of heavy smokers (that is, more than a pack a day) has increased. Teenagers are still smoking and more girls are acquiring the habit.

Young athletes switch to chewing tobacco, believing it to be less of a health hazard than cigarette smoking. However, chewing tobacco is highly addictive and is also associated with various cancers, including gum and tohgue cancers.
