There were a total of 192 crashes reported on Virginia’s interstate highways, including one fatal crash. The accident occured at 10:10 p.m., Saturday on Interstate 64 in Newport News, resulting in one fatality.
“While it is extremely difficult to determine specifically why there are less crashes and fatilities one year than the next, or one holiday period compared to another, the inclement weather experienced over this Labor Day holiday weekend resulted in less vehicular traffic,” said Col.Suthard. “Motorists also tend to drive more defensively during inclement weather and to reduce their speed. Still, past experience and statistics indicate that speed, either excessive or too fast for conditions, is a contributing factor in approximately 40 percent of all crashes.”
