The school-year is underway and many parents are already wondering how their children are doing in the classroom. The National PTA suggests that parents stop wondering and ask the teacher.
“Parents and teachers must work together as a team to solve problems and to develop strategies to help children in school,” said National PTA president Ann Kahn. “One of the best ways to accomplish this is at an effective parent-teacher meeting,” she added.
According to educators Lisbeth Brown and Mary Renck Jalongo, parent-teacher conferences are rated by parents as one of the most effective ways to communicate. Writing in the October issue of PTA Today, the National PTA’s magazine, the authors offer ideas for how parents and teachers can have a successful parent-teacher conference.
Even though teachers have a major responsibility for planning and conducting a parent-teacher conference, parents’ preparation and attitude toward the meeting can help to add to its success. Ms. Brown and Ms. Jalongo’s article in PTA Today suggests the following ways parents can have a productive conference.
