Col. R. L. Suthard, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police, announced recently that current crash reports indicate 11 persons lost their lives on Virginia highways during the Labor Day holiday weekend, compared to 24 for a similar period last year.
“At least two people were killed this year in alcohol-related crashes,” said Colonel Suthard, "another four were killed in crashes involving reckless driving, and at least two involving speeding. The fatalities included 10 drivers or passengers in motor vehicles and one pedestrian. Of the ten in motor vehicles, only three were known to have been using their seat belts.
