Kay Robertson, the new Director of the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community (RAAC), and the new Assistant Director Jo Ellen McNeal have jumped into the job of spreading the word about the organization.
“We want to reach out farther into the community and bring RAAC’s presence,” Mrs. Robertson said. “A lot of people don’t know RAAC exists. We haye the only movie theater in four counties,” she pointed out, mentioning that Warren, Fauquier and Madison counties, though their populations are significantly larger, have no movie theaters.
“We can’t compete with Culpeper,” Mrs. Robertson said, and its three first-run theaters. She explained that it is often several months before a movie becomes available for the 16 mm projection equipment RAAC uses, usually about the same time the movie becomes available for video rental. At $3 for adults and $2 for students, RAAC’s prices are lower than those of first-run theaters.
Although it costs more to see the movie at the Gay Street Theater than to rent a video, “There’s something 1 about walking into a movie theater with the smell of popcorn and the big screen, that’s better than watching on . TV in your living room,” she said. “Besides, sometimes people just want to go out on Saturday or Sunday nights.”
Batman, Accidental Tourist, and Dead Poets' Society are three of the movies that will be coming this fall, she said.
