Persimmons were used by Indians as food, mixing the pulp with commeal to make a bread. Early settlers improved upon the recipe, using wheat flour to make a bread that some claimed was superior to gingerbread.

The Oriented persimmons, which has the same flavor as the nativtf persimmons, is cultivated commer* dally in California. The cultivated fruit is 5-10 times as large as the native fruit. Ounce for ounce the Oriental persimmons contains fewer calories than the American variety. Three and a half ounces of the Orien-’ tal persimmon has 77 calories while its counterpart the American vari* ety contains 127 calories.

Persimmons are a fair source of vitamin C and a good source of vitamin A.
