For most of the children in Rappahannock County, it was their first exposure to children of different cultures and nationalities. They met, through their books, children from Russia, Korea, China, Albania, Greece, Columbia, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Brazil. Many of those children, Ms. Marshall added, were learning English in Mrs. Kaufman’s kindergarten class.
For most of the city students, she explained, it was a chance for them to learn about people who live in the country, “and deal with nature on a daily basis.” Many had never seen a live animal other than a dog or a cat, and most had never seen the open spaces in the country students’ pictures. They had no experience, Mrs. Kaufman added, with a world “not cluttered with cars, taxis, elevated trains and a multitude of people and stores. ”
Through a $300 grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, selections were made from each handcrafted book and compiled into a bound book, then printed. .Last Wednesday night, the former kindergartners, now in first grade, received their books.
Their parents came to the party too, and took turns reading examples of their child’s work from each page of the book. The smiles on the childrens’ faces as they listened to the readings bespoke the project’s success. They pointed to pictures taken by their friends, and laughed
