Compromise
leaves permit
fee at $12

Representatives of the high school Student Council Association and school administrators reached a compromise on the issue of the student parking fee at a meeting Tuesday afternoon.
The students agreed to recommend to the student body, and School Superintendent David Gangel agreed to recommend to the School Board, that the fee be set at $12 for this school year, and that those who have already paid $20 receive an $8 refund.
In later years the fee will increase bv $2 per year to a maximum of $20 by the 1993-94 school year, they agreed.
With fill dirt that has been donated and help from the highway department, which has agreed to provide grading for $1,000, Dr. Gangel said he hopes the new parking area can be available for student use this school year.
Money from parking fees in future years will be used to spread four inches of gravel on the area and eventually cover it with a three-inch-thick paved surface.
SCA President Benji Roy offered to have fundraisers to help keep fees down. He suggested that the SCA might have a car wash and donate half the proceeds to the parking lot.
Dr. Gangel replied, “We have a lot of fundraisers going on. I’m not interested in starting any new fundraisers, but if any organization wants to make a donation, that would be fine.”
The $12 figure was the mid-point between the $10 fee the SCA representatives asked for and a $14 figure Dr. Gangel said he had in mind. Approximately $1.25 of the fee is the cost of the parking sticker itself.
This meeting followed the School Board's meeting last Tuesday night, which was for the second month in a row dominated by student protests of the parking fee.
At that meeting Benji Roy presented the Board with petitions signed by approximately 150 students and 100 adults asking that the fee be dropped back to $3, that those who have paid the $20 receive a $17 refund, and that the parking lot in front be made into a permanent parking area. ,
