The Qet. 1 crop production forecast for Virginia indicated record high com, soybean and hay yields, according to the Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service.
The plentiful yields of feed and hay crops will provide ample suppliers of feed stocks for livestock this winter. Excellent crop growth statewide has been promoted by consistent and timely rains throughout the spring and summer months, the VASS report added.
Virginia’s record high com yield forecast of 106 bushels per acre was unchanged from the Sept. 1 forecast. The new record would surpass the previous record yield of 104 bushels per acre harvested in 1984 and would top last year’s yield by 27 bushels. This would put the state’s total com production at 32.9 million bushels, 41 percent above last year’s drought reduced crop of 23.3 million bushels.
