Suddenly, she said, her seventh graders became much more conscious of their handwriting, grammar and punctuation. “At the end of one 45-minute dictation session,” Ms. Marshall added, “the room was filled with seventh graders spontaneously and quietly reading books to their little buddies.”
All three adult participants agreed that one of the most important accomplishments of the project was taking learning out of a sterile, impersonal book task and bringing it alive. Because the writing and pictures were created by each child, the learning process became personal, and more successful, Ms. Marshall explained.
“This has been the most wonderful project,” Mrs. Kline added. “They have learned so much.” And, she noted, it covered a broad swath of the state’s standards of learning on the kindergarten level.
“This was a fun way of learning, rather than just sitting down with a reader. So much has come out of this,” Mrs. Kline concluded.
And as the children filed out of their former classroom last week, clutching their copy of “A Little City, A Little Country,” it was obvious that the benefits continue, and that the desire for learning inspired by the project was not left behind.
