and as they shouted out the countries’ names Mrs. Kline pointed out their locations on the globe.
After the class, she related, one of her students told her, “with serious excitement,” that his family has a book of maps at home. “The concept that maps represent real places where human beings live seemed to become more meaningful.”
The class discussion then evolved to possible reasons why the city children may have come to the United States. “Maybe there’s a war . . . Maybe they can’t find jobs . . . Maybe they aren’t free” were among the responses from the children. For Ms. Marshall, this indicated that the students understand the realities of life in a world unlike their own.
Mrs. Katz said that her seventh grade class also got an unexpected benefit from the program. Although they were skeptical at first of the idea of being paired with much younger kindergarten children, soon they found they were role models for their young partners.
