I HAVE THE ANSWER!!
From time to time the ordinary citizen, various politician pundits, and certain segments of the media accuse the members (singly or as a whole) of our United States Congress of various crimes and misdemeanors. They spend huge amounts of money frivolously. They write numerous irrelevant and unintelligible laws. They have accumulated an outrageously bloated staff (over 36,000 an average of 67 per Member of Congress). They all too often are found to be engaged in off-duty liaisons with members of the opposite (or same, of late) sex to whom they are not bound by the accepted bond of holy matrimony. They are said to be grossly overpaid, to have huge travel allowances, to do much of their shopping abroad at taxpayer expense, and to have lost sight of the lofty purposes for which their constituencies sent them to Washington in the first place. On and on it goes.
In all fairness, however, our beleaguered Congressmen and women maintain that they are skillfully keeping our Ship of State on an even keel in increasingly turbulent seas, that to do so requires a large (36,000??) and competent crew, that travel to their home districts every weekend is necessary to keep their fingers on the pulse of their constituents, that travels abroad are necessary to finger the pulses of foreigners, that the cost of living in Washington is high, that they work
