The arrival of books at Rappahannock County Elementary School was a cause for celebration last week.
These were special books, because they contained words and pictures created by a group of last year’s kindergarten and seventh grade students. “A Little City, A Little Country” was a joint project between RCES and Public School 105 in the Bronx, New York.
It was conceived by Laurie Marshall, a Rappahannock County artist who has frequently contributed her talents to creative enterprises involving the county’s children. The idea for the project, she said, was a coincidence resulting from her son starting kindergarten last year.
She found that one of his classmates had a grandmother who teaches kindergarten at a public school in the Bronx, in the middle of New York City. “An idea emerged from thinking about kindergarten in these two places.”
At first glance, the two places, Rappahannock County, Virginia and the Bronx, New York, seem worlds apart, she said.
