Fall is the time of the year when persimmons are seen downing trees along Virginia’s obscure hedge rows, at the edges of fields and on backlots of homesteads.
The mystery surrounding the popularity of this navtive fruit persists. On the one hand, persimmons attract a small number of connoisseurs, eager for their harvest.
On the other hand, there are a few folks who look upon persimmons with disdain, ranking it as fit for consumption only by the possum whose name in Southern folklore is linked to the persimmon tree.
