Without state grant,
library pares plans

The Library Board has decided to go ahead with plans to build a new library, hoping additional funds can be raised from foundations and private individuals to offset the grant the county did not receive from the state library board. Chariman William Young said Monday.
The building committee reviewed new building plans earlier that day, and anticipates going ahead with plans for a more traditional library than the original plans called for, he said.
Dr. Young said the Board wants to stick with plans for an approximately 5,000 square-foot building including a multi-purpose room. He said the Board is still looking at a $500,000 budget, with approximately half the sum raised or pledged So far.
Dr. Young said that if the library is unable to raise enough money for the whole project, the multi-purpose room might be built as a shell to be finished later. “It is more practical to build w hat we need, even if we don’t have the money to complete the interior, rather than to add on later, which would cost much more.” he said.
Dr. Young said there were no new plans ready to show the public yet, but the “angulation of the modules is gone.” He said the new plans would be for a building that is not as long, and with a “more conventional looking exterior.
“We are mobilized for approaches to foundations and an appeal to the citizens,” he said.
