Washington’s Town Council voted last week to request “aggressive enforcement” of ordinances regulating loitering in the wake of continued complaints about the group of young people who gather around the town square at Main and Middle Streets.
“Since we have tried to come to some resolution things have not gotten better,” Mayor Dean Morehouse told the council. “It has gotten worse.”
Speaking to about a half-dozen of the young people in attendance at the meeting, the mayor added, “Guests, visitors and residents have rights as well as you.”
Mr. Morehouse said his request for action was precipitated by continued complaints from town residents, as well as several confrontations in recent weeks between property-owners and members of the group. “I’m worried that someone is going to get hurt.”
