Frankly put, some Republican legislators have been afraid of being too vocal in their criticism of influential General Assembly Democrats. They fear if they anger some of the senior conservative Democrats who hold key leadership positions or money committee posts some dreadful punishment will ensue. And, indeed, such offenders have been known to lose any hope of getting a million or two for that pet project the folks back home wanted funded.
“I think if we’re members of a party, we’ve got to speak our piece,” said Del. Hargrove, chairman of the Joint Republican Legislative Caucus. “We can’t mince words if we want to sell the Republican philosophy and take control of the General Assembly.
There are indications that more Republican legislators will be willing to take on the powerful Democratic leaders. Already many GOP lawmakers have played hard ball in leveling charges that the incompetence of those in the Babies Administration and in the Democratic power elite of the General Assembly were largely responsible for the state’s worst fiscal mess in modern times, one that will led to severe reductions in state programs.
