Shenandoah National Park Su-\ perintendent William Wade has \ asked the Commonwealth of Vir- I ginia to act to ensure that existing air quality problems at Shenandoah National Park are not exacerbated by proposed new power plant development in the region.
“Current air pollution levels have undeniable effects,” Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior S. Scott Sewall said. “Visibility is substantially degraded most of the time, Park streams are being’ acidified, and several species of Park vegetation are proving vulnerable to existing air pollutants.”
To prevent further deterioration of Park resources, the Department recommended that the Virginia Department of Air Pollution Control not issue a permit for the proposed Multitrade Limited cogeneration facility near Hurt, Virginia (south of Lynchburg), unless the state can ensure that plant emissions will not add to adverse impacts to visibility, aquatic resources, or vegetation at
