Well! Think of the history of Western art! The art of Egypt, Rome, the Italian city states during the Renaissance, the glory that was Greece, and the art and music produced for the Church throughout the Christian era; all, or nearly all, of this art, that is the essence of Western Civilization, was commissioned, subsidized and otherwise encouraged without visible loss of artistic integrity.
Why are we different? Is it simply that one doesn’t like to pay taxes?
