Schools still
lack figures
on aid cuts

Money was the chief topic at last week’s School Board meeting.
School Superintendent David Gangel said he still has only “firmed up rumors” to go on in estimating how much state funds would be cut because of the Commmonwealth’s budget woes. “We may not get specific information until as late as February,” he said.
In the meantime the board approved his recommendation to leave one teachers’ aide position unfilled and shift some expenses from the general operating budget to the portion of the budget covered by Federal funds for Chapter One programs. This would save approximately $18,000, he said.
Aides at the elementary and high school have been picking up the responsibilities of the aide whose position was not filled, Dr. Gangel said.
“We hate to keep calling on certain people to do more,” Chairman Beverly Massie said, but she praised the “positive attitude” of the aides who had to take on extra duties.
Dr. Gangel said he wouldn’t recommend that the position be filled even if the money were available because, with even deeper cuts in the state contribution expected next year, “we may have to let people go.”
