He also proposed a committee of council members, residents and representatives of the young people to work toward resolving the problem and perhaps finding another place for them to gather. “You have a lot of support,” he told the young people. “This is not a problem unique to Washington, Virginia. There’s kids all across the United States with nothing to do.”
Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Bailey, Evelyn Willis and David Smoot were asked to serve on the committee.
In other business, the council:
• agreed to advertise a request for proposals for cable television to serve the Town of Washington. A public hearing will be held at the council’s Oct. 8 meeting.
• heard that the Census Bureau’s preliminary count had found 187 residents in the town, down about 20 percent from the 247 resident., counted in the 1980 census.
