The Hospice of the Rapidan is seeking home care and bereavement care volunteers, uncompensated employees providing supplementary support services to terminally ill patients and their families. Hospice volunteers are emotionally mature, skilled in listening, and certified through completion of training, according to volunteer coordinator Paige Coombs.
Volunteer tasks include:
Companionship: This is undoubtedly the single most important service that a volunteer provides to patient and family. A visit provides an opportunity for social contact and a break from normal routines. When the patient wants to talk, the volunteer is trained to listen and respond.
Transportation: Many spouses are unable to drive needing transportation for doctor’s visits, shopping, etc.
Respite: This allows the family members a brief absence to complete errands, to have a change to scene, or to have some time alone.
