Very few new solidly conservative Democrats in the mold of A.L. Philpott or V. Earl Dickinson or Howard Anderson will be winning election after election and the seniority and power that comes with it. The conservative Democrats have lost the numbers game both within party and state ranks.
Not that Virginia has suddenly turned totally away from its conservative moorings. Republicans have gained ground in the House of Delegates. The reapportionment process, barring gerrymandering so blatant it’s hard to conceive, will give them an opportunity to make further inroads in the legislature.
That means that not only are the moderate-liberal Democrats apt to become more emboldened against their conservative leadership, Republicans may finally in increasing numbers decide to stop kowtowing to the Democratic leadership and get into an “us against them” mode as some GOP leaders such as Del.
