State standards call for no more than 26 students in a kindergarten classroom unless there is a full-time teacher’s aide with the class, no more than an average of 24 students per class in a first grade, and no more than an average of 25 per class for second grade and higher.
The increase in enrollment should result in more money from the state, perhaps enough to balance the funds cut because of the state’s fiscal crisis, but the extra money will not be available until very late in the school year.
Another money related subject that was discussed at the board meeting was fund raising for the seventh-grade trip to Williamsburg.
Trip sponsor Arthur Neufeld said he hoped to have fewer product sales, particularly of “little things that gather dust on a shelf,” and concentrate on fund raisers that raise a lot of money. He said that students would continue to sell pizza, flower bulbs and wrapping paper.
This year there is a cookbook for sale with recipes from parents of students at the school and from teachers. That has been very successful, he said, and the students have not been directly involved in the sale. He also plans to continue the spaghetti and barbecue dinners. He hopes to also sponsor a concert by Trapezoid at the high school auditorium.
