Ponds all wet
To the editor:
In last week’s Rappahannock News, you published letters from two people who identified themselves as Ponds: Jesse Pond and Edith Pond.
In the first letter, Mr. Pond said that his resolve to vote again for the incumbent Congressman from our Seventh District was “stiffened,” for the express reason that his opponent, David Smith, is endorsed by “an organization of extreme liberals.” The organization, though characterized, was otherwise unidentified. Mr. Pond gave no other reason for the stiffening of his resolve.
I think, on balance, that Mr. Pond is all wet. There are many domestic issues facing the country that need resolution: the budget deficit, the S & L crisis, an increasingly polluted environment, the poverty and neglect affecting our major cities that have given rise to a national drug problem, and an educational system that is unable to produce the well trained, well disciplined workforce that America needs if it is to be competitive once more, to mention only a few.
The incumbent Congressman has treated these and other matters during his three terms with benign neglect.
To address such issues effectively, we need at least a more active representative in Congress. French Slaughter, the incumbent, has spoken on the House floor for only 99 minutes in six years. On this record,
