fragrant bubbling of apple butter smoldering on an outdoor fire, creating the feel of autumn as trees begin their seasonal change and the smell of woodfires and apple cider fill the air.
Strolling under the rays of an autumn sun bring thirst and hunger. Quenching both, spectators will find a smorgasboard of quality around the town beginning with perfectly flavored apple cider available thoughout the town.
Homemade delights can be found in various spots — a bake sale sponsored by the Rappahannock Extension Clubs at the Sperryville Antique Market, a Saturday wine tasting enhanced with homemade breads and pastries at Country Home Antiques and The Annex, an afternoon snack at the Woodsmoke Cafe and various delights like funnel cakes and drinks at the Church Mouse gift shop.
Crafts of various types and designs are offered from one end of town to the other. Local painter Tanya Richie adds color and technique to the afternoon sis she visits Southern Drawl Artworks on Main Street, Sunday afternoon.
Glassblower Eric Kvames, another local artisan, demonstrates at Water Street Antiques weekend afternoons while various other artists can be found at Old Way Craft Village demonstrating woodwork, metal work, glass work and other fine arts. Country Manor, at the west end of town on U.S. 211, will host a basketweaver.
Sperryville October festival is known for its fine collection of antiques from various periods and places. Keeping with the tradition, local businesses provide a variety of antiques and sales. Sperryville’s Indoor Antique Market, located off U.S. 211, hosts a variety of items on special sale for the weekend clebration.
Off the beaten track is Elmer’s Antiques, one quarter mile west of Sperryville on Rt. 651, his shop offers designs in many styles and periods. Country Home Antiques offers not only fine antiques of numerous periods but activities for the children while mom and dad browse.
Storytelling with John Cheatwood is avilable from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon under the sycamore tree. Several businesses have the kids in mind. That Sperryville Emporium and Gift Shop will provide activities in the parking lot for children.
