The Brandy Station Foundation was formed in early 1989 to foster protection of the historic rural character of eastern Culpeper County. The scene, on June 9, 1863, of the greatest cavalry battle ever fought in the Western Hemisphere, Brandy Station also lies at the heart of some of the finest agricultural land on the East Coast, most of which has been continuously farmed since that day.
The battlefield, including Stevensburg and Kelly’s Ford, has been certified a Virginia Historic Landmark and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources has determined that the site meets the criteria for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
Nevertheless, the area from the Fauquier County line at the Rappahannock to Brandy Station is threatened with massive commercial, industrial and residential development which would irreparably damage our prized resources, according to a Foundation spokesman. In fact, Secretary of the Interior, Manuel Lujan, Jr., in announcing his American Battlefield Protection Program, included Brandy Station among the most threatened Civil War Battlefields.
“The public is cordially invited to attend the Brandy Station Foundation’s fundraiser in support of its effort to preserve our most prized resources — historic sites, clean water, and prime farmland,” the spokesman added.
