Mr. Neufeld replied that every product sale not only involves student time but also class time to account for the money. “Some classes are good fund raisers, and some are not,” he said. “The kids try, but eventually they get worn out.”
He said he had explored the possibility of starting fund raising for the trip as early as fourth grade, but fourth grade teachers had vetoed that idea.
Besides getting School Board approval for his fund raisers, Mr. Neufeld also got approval to raise the direct cost for each student from $65 to $85. “Each year the cost of the trip goes up 10 to 12 percent,” he said. Students who cannot afford the cost will get financial help, he said.
The board also gave approval to a plan to allow seniors who only need a few credits to graduate, are overage for their grade, and are in danger of dropping out to work for part of the day in a “cooperative work experience.” Susan Fox, the drop-out prevention coordinator, will work with employers to make sure the work experience is related to the students’ educational experience, Dr. Gangel said.
