Funeral preparations: Families are more comfortable discussing these arrangements after talking with educated volunteers. Volunteers tour a funeral home gathering much useful information.
Bereavement care: Volunteers support the family often after developing a close personal relationship for up to thirteen months after the death. The contacts may be visits, cards, or telephone calls.
Volunteers may choose to serve hospice in areas other than direct patient care through clerical help, fund raising; public relations, or the Board of Directors.
Hospice volunteers have donated over 1,100 hours of community service for a value of $7,800 with 9,393 miles for a value of $2,067 this year. Volunteers saved hospice over $9,500 during this period, Ms. Coombs said.
