Baumgardner said that “if Virginia is the mother of presidents, then the 7th District is her heart,” adding that one of Rappahannock’s landmarks is Slaughter Mountain.
He said the Slaughter family has always been prominent in civic affairs and active in both political parties.
Ms. Slaughter, he said, “knows how to translate her vision into reality because she’s been doing it. It’s her livelihood.”
Marie Ritter of Hume, who considered running for the nomination but opted not to because of financing questions, addressed the convention briefly, saying that voters will be turning against Republican candidates due to the economic problems facing the country.
“We will be called upon, I’m sure, to lead this nation out of its domestic problems ... in the very near future,” said Mrs. Ritter,
The keynote speaker, U.S. Rep. L.F. Payne of Nelson County, told the crowd that any one of the three candidates “would be an excellent person to serve us in the United States Congress,” and said issues such as education, “sustained economic growth,” choice in family planning and health care would be Democratic issues in the coming campaign.
