What 'liberal'
really means
To the Editor:
In his letter of Sept. 5, Augustus C. Johnson takes issue with George Allen for not defining the term “ultra-liberal,” and not explaining exactly why he thinks that is a bad thing to be. Otherwise, he tut tuts, it is simply name calling, on the level of a small boy quarreling in a school yard.
A mere two paragraphs later, Mr. Johnson is off and running with words like “obscene” and “indecent,” without either defining or explaining the use of each. Obviously, Mr. Johnson feels that being called “ultra-liberal” is more inflammatory than being accused of obscenity or indecency. As a known conservative Republican, I wouldn’t have dared said so; therefore I am infintely (eternally, endlessly) grateful (appreciative, obliged, thankful) to him.
